I've been in Orlando this week for our largest annual sales conference -- bringing over 10,000 of our worldwide sales and marketing employees together for a week of "education," but most importantly "relationship building" which roughly translates into a week full of drunken debauchery.
As I sit here recovering from an incredible headache brought on by too many glasses of wine last night, I have to share the most unbelievable story that my colleague told me the other night.
Heather had the worst travel karma a few days ago when she arrived into Orlando. Flight delays, lost luggage, missing hotel reservation, so by the time she arrived at the Disney-theme park hotel where we all are staying at 1:30 am, she was exhausted.
She checked in at the front desk, got her key and went to her room. As she put the cardkey into the door, the light turned green and she turned the handle to open the door. Except...the door was locked from the inside with the chain.
Now any other person, myself included, would think, "hmmm.....looks like there's been another screw up and they've given me a room that they already gave to someone else," and then walk back to the front desk to get the matter resolved immediately.
But not Heather. As she tells it, she thought, "Hey, this is my room and I want to know who is in it." So she knocked on the door and she heard someone scurrying around inside the room, and a woman's voice replied, "just a minute."
The door opened and there was a hotel housekeeper, a little disheveled. She told Heather that she was "cleaning" the room. Of course, Heather quick on her feet, says, "not at 1:3o in the morning" and pushes her way into the room, only to find that the cleaning cart was blocking the door and that there was yet another housekeeper in the room.
And then Heather looked over to the bed to see the rumpled comforter. She quickly starting piecing together the situation, and was incensed, telling the two women that they were in her room, they were not cleaning the room, and she wanted both of their names.
She marched down to the reception and promptly recounted the story to the hotel manager -- which resulted in an incredible room upgrade.
The funniest part of the whole situation is that the rest of us who Heather told the story would never have thought twice to barge into the room when discovering it was locked from the inside.
And now all week long, I keep seeing the housekeeping staff and I can't get this story out of my head, not to mention that that behavior probably had been going on for awhile. Some guest misses their check in, the housekeepers think the guest is not showing up and then hijack the room for their own tryst without the knowledge of their supervisors. Ewwww.....
The wholesome Disney image has been marred by this story. Brings a whole new meaning to the "Happiest celebration on Earth."
