returning to civilization

The last three weeks have felt like eternity. With Rick's sinus surgery, my dental surgery and then the onset of a nasty cold, it's been almost a month of OTC and prescription drugs, surrounded by mounds of gauze and Kleenex.

One of Rick's diversions has been the guitar. Being somewhat housebound, he's had some time to pick up his guitars and play to his heart's content. And has even gone as far as to seek out a potential position in a band as lead guitar.

There was an ad on Craiglist looking for someone, and after looking at their playlist of classic and modern rock, Rick thought it might be a good fit. We headed down to a blue-collar pub in Kent last night to meet up with the guy organizing the band, and to watch the keyboardist/lead singer who was performing with another band that night. You know you're in the south end when the street is lined with places to get bail bonds.

If you love to people watch, this is the best place to do it. No need to get glammed up; we were heading to Kent after all. Hair pulled back into a clip, no makeup, and jacked up on cold medicine, we walked into a scene of twenty somethings reliving their high school days flirting and scanning the scene, and women in their mid-forties dancing with each other and twirling around on the dance floor.

I imagine that if this band thing takes off, this could, in theory, be our social scene. Rick's not convinced these guys will really be able to get the band off the ground, but at least he's got something to work toward for now. Plus, it gave him a reason to get a new amplifier, which now takes up real estate in our living room.

Boys and their toys....
